Traces of dark pitch lining spill over the rim of this old vessel, a remnant of the sealant used to help the clay hold liquids. What once served a practical purpose has left some of its prettiest markings: black trails against warm terracotta, each stopping at a different point along the neck. Below, pale marks and patches of exposed clay cover the vessel, showcasing its hard working life.
We’d leave this one empty on a console or low wooden pedestal, with its mouth in view. There’s plenty here without adding a thing.
