In the Mediterranean, olives were brought in from the grove, kept in brine, and scooped out a few at a time for the table. This old French olive spoon was made for just that, its long wooden handle reaching into the jar and the little holes letting the brine drain away. The bowl is deep and round, the handle finished with a simple turned detail, and the wood has mellowed to a warm honey brown.
A lovely reminder of the kitchens of Mediterranean France, where even a spoon had its particular purpose. We’d tuck it into a stoneware utensil pot, with its rounded bowl peeking above the rim.
