Woven in the 18th century, this verdure tapestry comes from the European tradition of hanging woodland scenes in country houses, where they dressed the walls and helped keep stone rooms warm. Its deep blue-green trees open onto a pale clearing, with faded gold leaves catching the light along the way. We’d give it a wall of its own over a mantle or a bed. It feels rather like having a secret garden just beyond the room.
Notes to the collector
Its age shows in areas of wear in the wool, and the backing is torn in places. Small metal loops are sewn to the backing that allow it to be hung.
